Fresh Talent Joins Uganda Men’s Team for 7s Challenger in Munich

Uganda’s rugby scene is undergoing some exciting changes, with the Men’s 7s team making waves in the headlines.

A lot of attention has been paid to Head coach Tolbert Onyango’s decision to release seven senior players from the training squad, with five of them even playing for their respective clubs during the second round of the Nile Special Rugby Championship playoffs last weekend.

The move did not go unnoticed, with many speculating and wondering if it meant that Onyango was looking to form a revamped squad for the final round of the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024, set to take place on May 18-19 in Munich, Germany.

Much to their delight, Onyango put an end to all the rumors on Thursday morning when he unveiled his 12-man traveling squad after the pitch session held at Kyadondo.

The team that will represent Uganda in the 7s Challenger 2024 in Munich will feature five talented fresh faces, namely Mubarak Wandera, Karim Arinaitwe, Mark Osuna, Allan Olango, and Aaron Tukei.

While they make their first appearance in the 2024 series, players like Denis Etwau, Alex Aturinda, and Norbert Okeny bring to the squad their invaluable experience, having played in all the past rounds throughout the year.

William Nkore has been entrusted with the captaincy for the Munich tournament, with Aturinda and Okeny serving as his deserving assistants. Onyango is confident in the team’s preparation and ready to take on the challenge.

Before leaving, he is excited that the tournament will leave a positive mark, with great stories to tell about the team’s performance in Munich.

Uganda is currently ranked ninth in the overall series standings, securing a position in Pool B along with Hong Kong China, Tonga, and Mexico.

There is no doubt that the competition promises fierce opposition, with the team determined to leave their mark and showcase their greatness to the global rugby fraternity.
