For 12 years, Atinoi Basil has helped golfers chase birdies and trophies. On the Watoto Caddies Event, he lastly had the prospect to chase considered one of his personal.

Most golfers bear in mind the shot that gained them the match. Few bear in mind the one that carried the golf equipment, looked for errant balls, learn the greens and quietly whispered, “Intention slightly left.” “Much less vitality on the swing.”

But with out caddies, golf can be a a lot lonelier sport. On Monday 3 August 2026, the same old order of issues modified at Uganda Golf Membership. The golfers stepped apart and the caddies took centre stage, because the Third Version of the Watoto Golf Event obtained beneath manner with a Cadies Event.
Because the Elite Amateurs and Execs put together to tee off later, 59 of the membership’s 140 registered caddies swapped their acquainted supporting position for the highlight, competing in a match organized of their honour.

For at some point, they have been now not carrying another person’s goals. They have been taking part in for their very own. Amongst them was Atinoi Basil, a soft-spoken caddie whose story mirrors that of many males who quietly preserve Uganda’s oldest golf course transferring.

When Basil arrived at Uganda Golf Membership in 2014, recent out of highschool, he wasn’t chasing trophies. He was chasing survival. “I had simply completed faculty and wanted one thing that would assist me earn a dwelling,” he recollects. “A cousin launched me to the membership, and that’s how every little thing began.”
What started as a short lived job turned a profession, a classroom and, unexpectedly, a ardour. Through the years, Basil has realized way over the place bunkers lie or how briskly the greens roll. He educated as a espresso barista and low roaster alongside the way in which, however caddying remained the occupation that persistently put meals on the desk and helped finance his schooling. Being a caddie, he says, is commonly misunderstood.

“Individuals suppose we solely carry golf luggage,” he says with a smile. “However a caddie is just like the golfer’s second thoughts. You information them, assist them perceive the course and provides recommendation all through the spherical.” It’s a position that calls for sharp commentary, endurance and belief.

Earlier than anybody is allowed to caddie at Uganda Golf Membership, they have to first be accepted by the membership skilled after present process one to 2 months of coaching.

They be taught each nook of the course, from hidden hazards and misleading bunkers to the refined slopes that may flip a successful putt right into a disappointing miss.
That information turns into invaluable as soon as they step onto the course beside golfers. However in contrast to many professions, there isn’t a assured paycheck ready on the finish of the month.
Caddies earn solely when they’re assigned to a participant by the caddie grasp. Some days deliver work. Others deliver solely hope.

“It’s informal work,” Basil explains. “Typically you’re employed, generally you don’t. But it surely has helped me pay faculty charges and help myself.” The uncertainty has by no means dimmed his enthusiasm.

If something, golf has change into a part of his identification. As a boy, Basil dreamed of sporting the Uganda Cranes jersey. Soccer was his old flame, however life had totally different plans.

At this time, one other dream has quietly taken form. “I need to stay in golf,” he says. “Possibly not as a caddie perpetually, however at some point as a golfer.” That ambition feels extra achievable after Monday’s match. For a number of hours, there have been no gamers asking for membership picks or studying tough putts.

The caddies turned opponents. Cheers echoed throughout the fairways as colleagues who often walked behind golfers now stood over their very own tee pictures.

It was greater than a match. It was recognition. Basil says the chance meant every little thing. “We admire Watoto for remembering us,” he says. “Daily we assist different folks take pleasure in golf, so it felt particular to have a day the place we might additionally play.”

His appreciation displays a bigger fact in regards to the sport. Golf could have fun champions, however each champion has somebody quietly strolling beside them.
Somebody carrying fourteen golf equipment beneath the afternoon solar. Somebody looking for misplaced balls within the tough. Somebody providing calm recommendation after a tough gap.
Somebody whose personal story hardly ever seems on the leaderboard. For Basil, golf has additionally change into a trainer.

“Golf is life,” he displays. “No person is ideal. You’ll hit a foul shot, however what issues is the way you reply with the following one.”

It’s knowledge earned not from textbooks however from hundreds of kilometres walked throughout fairways, watching victories, heartbreaks and every little thing in between.
As Uganda’s {golfing} neighborhood continues to develop, caddies stay amongst its quietest heroes. They’re guides, mentors, counsellors, strategists and generally even confidence coaches.

Their names could by no means be engraved on the trophies they assist others win. However for one unforgettable day at Uganda Golf Membership, the applause belonged to them. And maybe that was the best victory of all. As a result of each nice golfer walks the course with a caddie. Each caddie, nonetheless, walks the course carrying a dream of their very own.
Because the Watoto Golf Event continues, consideration now turns to Saturday’s sport, the place execs will take centre stage.
